The Aaronson laboratory is involved in cancer gene discovery and function with the goal of identifying novel targets for therapy

HIV-related opportunistic infections, vaccine response, and complications of HIV disease, including studies of the pathogenesis of inflammation that contributes to the co-morbidities associated with the aging of those with HIV infection.

The goal of our research is to better understand the effects of chronic metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, on brain function. Given the high utilization of energy by the brain, we aim to explore the implications of altered metabolism at the behavioral, circuit, cellular and molecular levels. Currently, we use animal models of diabetes to identify the ways in which long-term exposure to hyperglycemia can lead to increased susceptibility to stress and to addiction- or depression- or anxiety-like syndromes.

The Brody Lab studies novel approaches to initiate and increase adaptive immune responses against cancer. These include combinations of checkpoint blockade approaches, discovery of novel tumor immune evasion checkpoints, in situ vaccine strategies using Flt3L to mobilize dendritic cells (DC), cytotoxic therapy to induce immunogenic cell death and load DC with tumor-associated antigens, and DC activators such as TLR and other PRR agonists. The Galynker Suicide Research Laboratory investigates the psychological processes that make suicidal behavior possible. We conduct clinical research focused on understanding the Suicide Crisis Syndrome (SCS), which is a negative cognitive-affective state associated with imminent suicidal behavior in those who are already at high risk for suicide. We also investigate the mechanisms by which traditional long-term risk factors such as mental illness or histories of past attempts interact with the SCS to increase risk of suicide in the immediate future.

The laboratory’s research focuses on developing innovative and effective therapies for pancreatic beta cell preservation, immune tolerance and pancreatic beta cell regeneration for the treatment of diabetes.

Exploring virus-host interactions

Dr. Gelb has developed an extensive program in genomics focusing on traits associated with heart malformations. The Gelb lab is studying Noonan and related syndromes, which arise from defects in RAS/MAPK signal transduction. Ongoing studies are using RASopathy induced pluripotent stem cell models and fruit fly models to elaborate disease pathogenesis and for drug discovery. The Gelb group is also studying congenital heart disease as a complex genetic trait, working with the Pediatric Cardiac Genomics Consortium (PCGC). The PCGC is applying various ‘omics’ approaches to discover the causes of these birth defects. In addition, the Gelb group is undertaking functional genomics studies using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells.

Despite optimal use of traditional therapeutic approach to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality due to myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke remain high and continue to rise globally. Inflammation and immunity are key processes in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis—and promising targets for new therapies to treat cardiovascular disease. Our goal is to identify immune regulatory networks and signaling pathways relevant to human atherosclerosis to improve data-driven selection of suitable molecular targets for novel anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory therapies in cardiovascular disease

The Ginzburg laboratory is focused on understanding the interface of erythropoiesis and iron metabolism to develop new targeted therapies for the clinical management of iron overload anemias (e.g. β-thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, anemia of inflammation and cancer, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative diseases). We are evaluating the role of novel regulators involved in the coordinated physiology of hemoglobin synthesis and exploring incompletely understood regulation of iron metabolism in dyserythropoietic diseases.

The Laboratory for Biological Systems in Stress and Disease studies the systems-level biology of emotional memory and stress in healthy rodents and humans, and examines dysregulation of this biology in animal models of psychiatric disease and human patient populations. We combine modern techniques from systems neurobiology, including optogenetics, in vivo recordings, gene transfer, microarrays, and in vivo calcium imaging, with classic techniques from neuropharmacology, endocrinology, molecular biology, and behavioral neuroscience to address research questions. Our long-term mission is to advance new frontiers in basic science with high translational relevance and provide new biologically-driven, effective treatments for stress-sensitive disease.

The research in this laboratory is focused on identifying the components and molecular mechanisms regulating actin architecture in cardiac and skeletal muscle during normal development and disease. Control of actin filament lengths and dynamics is important for cell motility and architecture and is regulated in part by capping proteins that block elongation and depolymerization at both the fast-growing (barbed) and slow-growing (pointed) ends of the filaments.

Our research examines the neural and computational mechanisms underlying human beliefs, decision-making, and social interaction in both health and disease using fMRI, lesion, neuropharmacology, and computational modeling.

Dr. Guttman’s groundbreaking research focuses on atopic dermatitis/eczema and contact dermatitis. Her research has important implications in advancing the current molecular knowledge on atopic dermatitis/eczema and developing new therapeutics. Dr. Guttman currently develops biomarkers of atopic dermatitis that could be used for future studies with targeted therapeutics. She also concentrates on unraveling the primary pathogenesis of this common disease.

The Gümüş Lab develops and applies computational methods and tools used in cooperative team efforts to define and implement genomics-based precision medicine approaches.

Our specific research areas are focused on SIN3a complex epigenetic regulation of gene expression, and gene therapy in vascular physiopathology and progressive coronary artery disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and heart failure.

Research on our lab is focused on understanding the mechanisms by which autism-associated mutations lead to the manifestation of behavioral deficits, with an emphasis on the effect of these mutations on the brain oxytocin system, known as a major modulator of mammalian social behavior, and on brain circuits of social behavior. Our lab applies integrated molecular and behavioral neuroscience approaches and uses transgenic rat models for ASD and neurodevelopmental disorders to identify molecular targets for treatment and to uncover altered brain circuits that can be manipulated with circuit-specific non-invasive interventions.

The Hausman/Cagle Lab investigates the mechanisms of peripheral nerve damage and focuses on identifying novel diagnostic tools and treatments to ease the burden of these injuries. Another aspect of our research involves translational joint biomechanics studies to assess the strength and feasibility of a variety of treatments for injuries of the upper extremity.

Translational research in the field of transplantation biology

The Hildebrandt Lab is dedicated to research of the neurobiology and treatment of eating, weight, and body image disturbance across the age spectrum. We use a mixture of neuroimaging, psychophysiology, neurocognitive, and endocrine assays as well as integrated technology solutions to inform the creation of new treatments for these populations. Results from our work in our lab continue to help us to develop, implement, and disseminate empirically supported treatments to our patients and their families.
